Pro Tip - Large Rain Poncho

When heading out into the wilderness, one great thing to bring with you is a large rain poncho.  There are a lot of reasons why you might do this.  The obvious reason is that it will help keep you dry if it starts raining.  Staying dry is really important in survival situations.  I can't stress this enough.  This is especially true if you are in a cold environment.  What people don't realize though is that it doesn't have to be that cold for things to get dangerous.  Many cases of hypothermia occur during the summer.  It just needs to get a little bit cool at night.  If you are wet and you go to sleep on a cool night, you can loose body heat really easily.  This is how people die from cold in the summer.  Yes, that is a real thing.  Don't think that you are going to be tough and sleep through the night when you are wet.  Be smart; stay dry.

There are other reasons to bring a large rain poncho with you.  It isn't just something useful to wear when its raining.  It can also be used as a component of a makeshift shelter.  It will help keep the rain out of your shelter and help keep the heat in.  If you want to build a quick shelter and don't have anything better like a survival blanket, a poncho can come in handy.

Another thing that people don't always think of is collecting water.  If you run out of water and don't have a filter or a pot for boiling water, a poncho or survival blanket can be setup to collect rain water.  This is a really nice thing to be able to do and can save you in a tight spot.

What if you want to wear one in the rain but still have a spare for other purposes?  Remember, ponchos are really compact and they don't weight a lot.  You can bring two or three with you.  You can wear one and use the others for collecting water or as a shelter component.  This works if you just want to quickly throw something in your pack.  If you are planning things out more carefully or building a proper survival kit there are better options.  You could bring a combination of one poncho and one survival blanket.  That would actually work better than bringing two ponchos.
